The B-Vitamins - Support for Stress Management and Health Stress is an unavoidable fact of life. Stress is the biological response that our bodies go through as a result of life's many stressors. A stressor is anything or any situation that disrupts the usual state to which we are accustomed, or in which we are at ease. Extreme heat or extreme cold are stressors. Likewise, fighting with an enemy or receiving a wealthy inheritance are stressors. Many of life's positive and negative experiences are stressors, because they push us beyond the normal or balanced state of customary ease.
WHAT IS STRESS MANAGEMENT? How well our bodies are able to respond to or compensate for biological disruption including mental aspects, is the subject of stress. Our bodies manage stress in order to avoid the ill-health that stressors can inflict upon us. A continuous stream of stress, if not metabolically managed, sets up metabolic imbalances that can result in sickness, and otherwise compromise our long-term health, especially in matters of cardiovascular health and cancer avoidance.
HOW DO THE B-VITAMINS FIT IN? The B-vitamins are necessary for all facets of regulating and keeping in balance the body's metabolic machinery. An inadequate daily supply of the B-vitamins obtainable from a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, wholegrains, legumes (beans), and other dietary sources, can significantly contribute to stress caused ill-health, which can be manifested as a general malaise. Those who do not consistently consume adequate quantities of real and whole foods can benefit from stress management with B-vitamin supplementation.
WHAT IS AN OPTIMAL SUPPLEMENTATION? An optimal natural source B-vitamin product is formulated to supply high levels of the B-vitamins for people enduring significant levels of stress and/or not able to achieve consistently adequate daily dietary levels of the B-vitamins. Also included should be choline bitartrate and inositol. These two nutrients are involved in preventing fatty deposits in the liver that compromise the liver's ability to destroy stressful environmental chemicals entering the body and body hormones that drive stress. Acceptable high levels include 25 to 50 milligrams of the B-vitamins and 25 to 50 micrograms for Vitamin B12 and biotin, and 0.4 to 1 milligram of folic acid. (0.4 milligrams equals 400 micrograms) Using a quality natural source B-vitamin combination as directed by the manufacturer is not associated with adverse effects, as is often the case with medical drugs. The B-vitamins have a wide margin of safety because they are water soluble and do not accumulate in the body.
ARE THERE OTHER BENEFITS BEYOND STRESS CONCERNS? In addition to playing a central role in facilitating stress management, the B-vitamins are important to maintaining a healthy nervous system and healthy skin, hair, eyes and mucous membranes. Metabolism in general is not only concerned with stress management, but all of the chemical processes that bring about growth and repair and healthy tissues. Therefore, the B-vitamins are important to all health issues, physical and mental. The B-vitamins are also central in developing energy levels. Elderly people are at a higher risk of developing B-vitamin deficiencies because their dietary supply can be curtailed due to reduced appetite and energy output and because of age-related compromised absorption. Some medications associated with the elderly may contribute to B-vitamin deficiencies, such as diuretics. A B-vitamin supplement providing optimal quantities of the B-vitamins is especially useful in managing the quality of life in the elderly. Recent developments in heart disease research indicates that those with low levels of vitamins B12, B6 and folic acid can accumulate unhealthy levels of homocysteine, a condition that is now viewed as a serious risk for heart disease. Elevated homocysteine levels are thought to damage arterial walls, allowing cholesterol and other factors to develop blocked arteries and the possibility of heart attack. Homocysteine is a normal protein metabolism byproduct that is removed by further metabolism that is dependent on B12, B6 and folic acid.
