Fish Project

by Alison Taylor of Alison Designs, Harlaxton Lincs.

You will need:-

1. Several colours of embroidery thread (I always use Madeira No. 40 - 100% viscose).

2. "CraftMistress" - for each fish: sufficient to load your hoop twice; either 1 layer of Romeo or two layers of Guliette.

3. Small amount of toy stuffing.

Instructions

1. Load bottom bobbin with same type of thread you use in the needle - you may have to alter the tension on the bobbin spring to achieve favourable results.

chambres Ennis2. Load fish design onto your card and insert into machine.

3. Load hoop with "Craftmistress" so it is "drum-tight", and fit hoop to embroidery arm.

4. Embroider fish onto "Craftmistress", following colour changes as advised by machine.

5. Sew second side of fish, remembering to mirror the image before commencing second side.

6. Remove hoop from machine and take embroidery out of hoop. Trim surplus "Craftmistress" from around fish, taking care not to cut the embroidery.

7. Place both sides of fish in warm water, and agitate gently occasionally until all the "Craftmistress" has been removed from embroidery. It is advisable to change the water once or twice while doing this, to ensure removal of all the "Craftmistress".

8. Dry Both sides of fish on a flat surface.

9. When dry, place right sides together and sew around fish, leaving a gap between tail fin and bottom body fin.

11. Close the open seam using ladder stitch.

Your fish is now complete!!

Tips:-

* You can experiment using different colours; I found that using a variable colour on the body section gave very interesting results.

* Try using a metallic thread in the needle, although you may have to alter the tension on the bobbin spring. You do not need to use metallic thread in the bottom bobbin, just ordinary embroidery thread.

* Attach a "jump-ring" through the mouth of a finished fish, and hang on a chain or leather thong to use as a necklace. I believe the fish are lightweight enough to also use as earrings!!
