Favour Bag Project
by Alison Taylor of Alison Designs, Harlaxton Lincs.

You will need:-

  1. CraftMistress water soluble fabric (either one layer of "Romeo" or two layers of "Guliette").
  2. Embroidery thread in the colour/s of your choice (it is advisable to use a good quality thread such as Madeira 40).
  3. 1 x 30 cm length of ribbon, 6mm wide, in the colour of your choice.
  1. Load the .hus files bag01 and bag02 onto your programmable card.
  2. Place the CraftMistress in the embroidery hoop, drum tight. Load bottom bobbin with the same colour and quality thread as you use in the needle. Sew one each of the designs bag01 and bag02 in the colour/s of your choice.
  3. Using a pair of sharp-tipped embroidery scissors, remove excess CraftMistress from your embroideries by cutting close to the thread, being very careful not to snip any of the stitches.
  4. Cut away the jump stitches. Carefully cut away the thread in the middle of the satin stitch circles, again being very careful not to snip any of the satin stitches.
  5. Using a running stitch sew both sides of the bag face together, stitching the fabric close to the edge.
  6. Dissolve away the rest of the CraftMistress by holding the bag under cold running water. For best results, then leave bag to soak in warm water for at least two hours. This will ensure the finished product feels soft.
  7. Leave to dry flat.
  8. Turn bag right side out.
  9. Thread the ribbon through holes and tie a bow at the front.

Your bag is now complete.

VARIATIONS ON A BASIC THEME

The .hus files bag01 and bag02 stand-alone and are used as described to make acomplete favour bag.

The file bag01.hus can also be used to personalize bag designs of your own. Itis a simple matter to add a stitch pattern from your own library of designs via theCustomising software. The following steps will guide you through the simple processinvolved.

1/. Launch your customising program and open the file bag01.hus. (See Fig 1).  Fig 1 2/. Select the stitch pattern which you wish to sew onto the bag and open it using the file/insert function or click on the insert icon. (See Fig 2).  Fig 2
3/. Click on this design to activate it. A blue box will appear around it. (See Fig 3).

Fig 3

4/. Left click on it and hold down the mouse button to enable you to drag it into the desired position on the blank bag side.  Fig 4
5/. Click on file/combine or on the combine icon.

(See Fig 5).

Fig 5 6/. All that remains is to save the combined design to the location of your choice and load to your programmable card when required.

This technique affords the ability to produce an unlimited variety of bags. If you lookat the basic bag stitch pattern you will notice that the top line of satin stitch and thesatin stitch rings incorporate a colour change. This allows even further variation in yourbag design.

Our sample bag has a design on only one side but of course it is equally valid to placea design on both sides of your bag.

Of necessity the weave of the bag fabric has to be fairly loose to give the correctquality to the finished product. This will have a minor effect on some stitch patterndesigns and a little experimentation may be required to achieve the best results.
