NetCorps and the Connecting Canadian's StrategyConnecting Canadians is the Government of Canada's vision for making Canada the most connected country in the world. The strategy aims to make Canada the world leader in developing and using an advanced information infrastructure and building a stronger economy and society. Connecting Canada to the world is a key component of the strategy that NetCorps Canada International fulfills, showcasing the information technology expertise of young Canadians. Roots: A History of NetCorps Canada InternationalIndustry Canada has had extensive experience with many youth employment programs that involve information and communications technologies. Building on this knowledge, NetCorps Canada International was conceived in 1996 by Dr. David Johnston, President of the University of Waterloo, a prominent advocate and advisor to the federal government on information highway issues. Phase IIn 1997, Industry Canada contributed to a NetCorps-style project that sent two residents of Cape Breton to Angola for Internet and Geographic Information Systems projects. Phase IIIn 1998, the efforts of Industry Canada, the Canadian International Development Agency and a coalition of Canada's largest international development volunteer-sending agencies secured 14 internships in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Phase IIIFurther collaboration with Industry Canada and the coalition of international development agencies in 1998 saw the Canadian International Development Agency offer 30 internships for the Americas. This phase was announced by the Prime Minister at the Summit of the Americas in Santiago, Chile, in April, 1998. SuccessInterns, international development agencies and partners in host countries were delighted with the results of all phases of NetCorps, from the perspective of intern contributions in host countries and the enhancement of intern skills and careers. Phase IV - NetCorps Canada InternationalWith 255 internships successfully completed each year from 1999-2002, Industry Canada obtained the funding necessary for 255 new placements in 2002-2003. The department continues to work with the coalition and has established an interdepartmental advisory committee with a view to long range, strategic planning & financing. The source of all funds directed toward Phase IV NetCorps internships is the Youth Employment Strategy of Human Resources Development Canada.
